Born out of frustration of the status quo, and having fallen in love with two YouTube series (Doing it Ourselves and The Pethericks), a vision was formed by an informal group, particularly during the second lockdown phase of Covid19, of what TV used to be like, and what it could be like again. Around those two shows some ideas were formed.

At first, fearing that no one would take them seriously, it was more chewing the fat and wishful thinking. Until someone business planned the idea, and, using some trade data, and surprisingly easy to get information on ad rates, sponsorship expectations and production costing, it became apparent that it might be something to work on.

The frustration was originally formed from the lies of disinformation by certain news organisations, but, in reality, it was television more generally.

It had been dumbed down, and, no matter the organisation, there seemed to be more interest in making mindless reality television, than there was in making television that helped society and built communities, as well as provide accurate, non-partisan news coverage.

The problem was always the news. It was costly, and took an otherwise profitable company idea and made it into a loss-maker. Yet it was the core of what this team wanted to do, so, back to the spreadsheets, plans were hatched, tested and ideas put in place.

Slowly, but surely, a plan that worked came out of the process.

The next problem became finance. None of the team had much money to speak of: no billionaires here (alas). So potential partners were reached out to, and crowdfunding would have to be the key. And that is where they all are today, Pound by Pound, the team are putting together every penny to make it work.

The group don’t have large followings on social media, and don’t have contacts willing to front them the money, but there is absolutely no plan to let that stop them.

Great television, like the early BBC, that informs, educates and entertains. What’s not to love?
